Blog Post Title One

Hello!

Hope you’re hanging in there. I’m bringing you lots of light and chill links today – I need them, too!

Two notes before you get to it…
1. There are only two episodes left of this season’s podcast, and I’m already planning next season. I have my guests wrapped and am now working on advertisers (see below for the advertising bit, because I’ve opened up new slots again).

For next season, I’ve been considering video. Part of me loves the ease of just hopping in my podcast studio (aka linen closet) and having great audio-only talks. But there’s the other part of me that knows people love a video component and it could help get more listeners to the pod

  1. I’m teaching three classes in August on growing a cool-season cut flower garden. See below for all the classes, or head to my events page now to grab a spot.

Alright, I’ve got an August Part 2 and an essay (I’m writing again) coming your way later this month.

I’m really loving the choice to make this newsletter totally free. It feels good to not have to strategically place a paywall, which can leave people out. Also really loving all of you who still continue to support this work. Helps a lot! THANK YOU!

Love,
Jessica

The Things That Freaked My Week

Some things I’m currently thinking about / loving…

INSIDE
108 Asian Cookies by

Kat Lieu

My son just started getting into cooking, and I’m buying this for his birthday. Each dough recipe includes“ingredients from the diaspora”like gochujang, ube, miso, sambal, tahini, and matcha. So excited for him to bake me some…

Key Takeaways From The FDA’s Latest Panel on Menopause Hormone Therapyvia Elektra Health
There’s some major education and catching up to do when it comes to the “higher powers” understanding women’s health. A good start (and also, GET IT TOGETHER).

Gimme
I want the cork lamp in the photo, too.

After The Hunt
This movie looks good! Strange choice with Chloe’s hair…but also sort of like it?

Proud Mary
My friend Harper just relaunched her brand, Proud Mary, and it’s beautiful! She collaborates with global artisans to make original art and fine folk art prints. As long as I’ve known Harper, she’s been one of the good ones when it comes to highlighting the work of artisans AND compensating them fairly for their work.

OUTSIDE
Woods Nature Spray / Tick + Mosquito Repellent from My July (photo above)
From time to time, I do some creative consulting work for brands doing great things. And My July is one of those brands. They just launched their new Woods spray, and it’s UNREAL. I’ve been using it as my daily scent because it smells so good. (Also, my husband had to buy his own bottle because he loves it so much, too).

One of the things that’s so cool about this product is that it was born from the founder’s (Micaela) own struggles with Lyme disease. She wants everyone to be protected from bugs without smelling like a citronella candle. She even got it tested for efficacy, and it’s clinically proven to offer 85% protection against mosquitoes and complete protection against ticks when reapplied every 3-4 hours.

Really proud of their launch! I told Micaela I’d be sharing about it, and she wanted to offer you 15% off with code WOODS15 (expires 8/15). Just a friendly discount, NOT AN AFFILIATE THING.

Spray / Branching Stock
I love growing Stock for its fluffy flowers and insanely good smell, but don’t love that it’s a one-hit wonder (you get one stalk/one big flower). My friend Peachey alerted me to this cultivar of Stock that branches and gives you more than just one bloom. Will be growing this season.

Here’s how to embrace the benefits of ‘blue health’ by Alisa Hrustic via Washington Post
LOVE this piece by Alisa. Water has always been a balm for me, and reading the benefits is pretty cool. Excited to explore blue health more.

Flower Pressing
I upgraded from pressing flowers/plants between old IKEA shelves and my heaviest cookbooks and had some proper presses made by a friend (which is just two pieces of MDF board with 6 holes drilled for screws for tightening). It’s changed everything, and I’m hoping to have framed pieces available soon!

Two new episodes of INSIDE + OUTSIDE PODCAST

Ochuko Akpovbovbo

And thank you to this week’s sponsor,Week Of The Website! YES, they can make you a website in a week (and it will lookreally good, too). And they’re offering a special something for Inside + Outside listeners.

What people are saying…
“I've been garden-curious for years but really didn't know where to start or what I could even grow with the small space I have outside my rented apartment.

Within one conversation, Jessica got me so excited about the possibilities, and now I can't wait to get my hands in the soil every day!”

- Jessica G, Los Angeles

While I’m not on IG anymore…I still love sharing. Check out the Basker feed (updated weekly)!

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
